Our wonderful volunteer Helen shares her picks of the 2019 History Festival program.
This will be the Best Ever Festival! Not sure if it can get any better. I am so looking forward to May!
Open Doors will be great. I am visiting Anlaby Station on Sunday 28 April as part of The Best of Town and Country bus trip with the National Trust. Monday 29 April will be an exciting day, as John Connolly and I (both volunteers) are going to open the Torrens Parade Ground for very interesting tours of the building and surrounds. We are looking forward to doing this.
This year is the centenary of the famous Smith Brothers’ flight from England to Australia. Lainie Anderson has organised an Epic Flight Centenary Magical History Tour of relevant Adelaide sites, and will share lots of information with us about the brothers and their history. I was sure to book my spot on this tour early!
As usual, thanks to SA Power Networks, the History Trust's Magical History Tour is happening on Wednesday 22 May. A wonderful day out; starting early with lovely bacon and egg breakfast at the Sir Thomas Playford ETSA Museum at Kurralta Park, then off on a big bus for a day of adventure!
Other events that I am looking forward to (and there are so many – 691 in total) include Discovering Edward Stirling, Lost Cinemas, Peek into the Past with Popeye, Partridge House, the Old Ghan and the Edmund Wright Trail.
And there are many exhibitions, so we can fill in our spare time with these, as the hours are much more flexible.
I hope everyone enjoys this as much as I do! Event organisers around the state have once again put together a wonderful program for us. Enjoy May!
